Apple Resources:

  • Xcode – Apple’s IDE required to develop for Mac or iPhone. Free download.
  • Apple’s Developer portal – Documentation, IDE, SDKs and developer forums. NOTE: Some services are only available if you are a registered Apple Developer.
  • iPhone Reference Library – Coding How-Tos, developer documentation and code samples.

Game Resources

  • cocos2d – The best 2d game engine going. LGPL. It is community supported. Active forums. They have a collection of iPhone best seller games to their credit. Consider a donation if you choose to use them as your platform.
  • ParticleDesigner – Awesome little tool to add particle effects to your cocos2d application (brief tutorial on how to insert particle effects here).

Notes and word processing

  • OpenOffice – Free. Open source office suite.
  • Awesome Note – iPhone app. Greatest note taking app for iPhone. Awesome note is AWESOME.
  • Google Docs – Free. Web based office suite. Requires a Google Account.

Graphics Tools

  • GIMP. Awesome free image editor.
  • Inkscape. Awesome free vector image program.

Sprite Tools

  • Pixen. Create pixel based 2d sprite sheets.
  • Pencil. Very cool, old fashioned 2d animation software. Oh and its Open Source.
